IDP

The Office of the Information and Data Protection Commissioner (IDP) is the national supervisory authority of the Republic of Albania, in charge of supervising and monitoring the protection of personal data both in public and private sectors and for ensuring the right of access to public information held by public sector bodies.

The IDP Commissioner’s Office was established in 2008 with the Law No. 9887, dated 10/03/2008 “On the Protection of Personal Data”, as amended by the Law No. 48/2012.

The IDP has the power to conduct administrative investigations, monitor the proactive transparency and promote a culture of transparency and openness with national public authorities. It has a responsibility to verify compliance on the right to information requirements, in both proactive and reactive transparency, handle complaints lodged by citizens, civil society, journalists and interested stakeholders, in cases where public information is refused, conduct training and awareness-raising activities, etc.

International cooperation is also an area where the IDP Commissioner’s has paid continuous efforts in both right to information and protection of personal data.

The right to information is a fundamental right in the Albanian Legislation enshrined in Article 23 of the Constitution of Albania.
